JOSH TINKLER-JOSEPHI

Technical Officer
AirSuite - Automated Flight Management Software

Sign up for Josh

When I was in university my computer literacy was pretty low. I thought you had to hit keyboard shortcuts, (alt + ctrl + delete) all at once, at the same time. Despite that, I completed a degree in commerce and was working in communications and policy but I found myself increasingly drawn towards the aspects of my role that involved code. As someone who likes to create, I loved the idea of being able to write code and see something tangible being built. Also, as a person who values learning, I loved the idea of having the opportunity to always learn something new. Despite having little to no knowledge of coding, I decided then to learn web development by doing the FreeCodeCamp curriculums and slowly transitioned my way into working for a software company in the aviation space.

Area of Expertise: Experience with software development and design, aviation, and start-up experience.

Technology Requirements: The ability for your class to participate in a 2 way online video conference with the speaker. This includes a microphone, camera, speaker, and smartboard or tv (to see the speaker).

KEITH HAUTALA

Natural Resources Professor and GIS Expert
Confederation College

Sign up for Keith

He went from loving work that had him sleeping in a tent most nights (...he still loves sleeping in a tent by the way) to enjoying using computers to help solve sustainability problems.

While he "can't draw a straight line with ruler", he enjoys making some cool maps with the help of a computer.

He is researching how machine learning can help in natural resource work -- how the same techniques that do "facial recognition" can be used to identify important ecosystem features from imagery of the world.

He volunteers frequently with the K-12 community, is passionate about the role of GIS has in helping us understand our world, and sees where this technology has a role in nearly all areas of work - from health care, to business, to environmental management.

Area of Expertise: Keith has a background and research interest in the use of GIS and remote sensing (satellite imagery, drones, etc.) to help support sustainable decision-making of our natural resources. His Master's degree focused on the use of GIS to model/map wildlife habitat and he has been hooked ever since. He teaches GIS courses in the natural resource programs at Confederation College.

She grew up in a household with a very methodical dad who was a professional engineer, and a mom who was an intuitive artist. She always loved math, solving problems, and being creative, and even though she didn’t have any female role models in Engineering, She decided to follow my dad and older brother's footsteps and get a degree in Electrical Engineering. As one of 3 girls in her class in university, she never felt that she was different and saw all of my classmates as equals. After graduating from university she worked in various companies, usually as the only female engineer, and has learned that treating everyone with respect, believing in yourself, and approaching challenges with an open mind, provides a world of possibilities.
