Science North Partnership

The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre is a proud partner of Science North. Science North kicked off the 3rd annual Kenora Science Festival held from September 19th – 24th. The week was filled with science and innovation-related programming, including Indigenous Ingenuity exhibit at the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre, Science and technology programming in the high schools, Brain tap, Youth climate action summit, and Science trivia night, all culminating with the flagship Science Carnival at the Whitecap pavilion.

Over the past three years, Science North has been working hard to expand its programming across Northwestern Ontario. Not only has the Kenora Science Festival seen growth since its inaugural event 3 years ago, but the Indigenous Ingenuity exhibit is also scheduled to be travelling across Northwestern Ontario communities from September 2022 until June 2024. On top of this, Science North recently announced that it would be expanding its presence to include two physical and permanent locations in both Kenora and Thunder Bay. In Thunder Bay, the plan is to have a new 34,000 sq. ft. facility and in Kenora there are plans to add an addition to the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre to accommodate the new Science North facility.

This is truly an exciting time for communities across Northwestern Ontario. The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre’s partnership with Science North will inevitably be strengthened by these new permanent locations and we hope to bring increased programming opportunities across Northwestern Ontario. The first of these new programming opportunities is scheduled for March 2023 with a partnership between Science North, FSET and the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre. The first Kids Code Camp will be offered in Kenora during the week of March Break! Stay tuned for more information about this exciting opportunity.
