To be With funding through FedNor, the Sustainable New Agri-Food Products and Productivity (SNAPP) Program is an initiative of the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN), a division of the Sault Ste Marie Innovation Centre in partnership with the Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance and the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre.
Eligible individual applicants can receive up to $10,000 at 50% cost-share.
Collaborations of 3 or more applicants can receive up to $25,000 at 50% cost-share.
Applicant Eligibility
- Start-ups and existing businesses, not-for-profits and Indigenous communities
- Applicants must have at least one component of their business located in northern Ontario
- Project activity must occur in northern Ontario
Eligible Expenses
- All costs shall be limited to purchasing equipment that directly allows eligible project activities to occur
- Purchases must be made after the SNAPP Intake opening date (November 4, 2024) to be eligible

What are some examples of eligible projects?
– Processing equipment (mixers, sterilizers, wash, and pack systems, etc.) for the creation of innovative value-added products to expand to new consumer markets and meet demand
– Packaging equipment (vacuum sealers, bottling equipment, labelers, etc.) to enable expansion of new production lines and increase distribution
– Innovative pest or predator management to increase efficiency and better control crop production
– Precision agriculture technologies to meet management objectives and increase overall sales
– LED lighting for hydroponic growing to increase the productivity of year-round produce
– Irrigation or rainwater harvesting system to increase productivity and improve drought resilience.
– Minimal or no-till equipment to improve crop productivity and increase environmental benefit.
– Passive solar greenhouse system to increase year-round production and reduce energy use.
What are some examples of eligible costs?
– Food or fibre processing equipment
– High-tunnels or greenhouse structures
– Food packaging or labelling equipment
– Cold storage equipment
– Building materials (i.e., lumber, fencing)
– Farm production equipment
– Equipment Delivery Costs
– Technology upgrades
What are some examples of ineligible costs?
– Equipment installation or servicing
– Rolling stock
– Inventory
– Labour costs
– Consumables (any non-permanent equipment, products or structures that cannot be used for multiple years)
– Rented or leased equipment
– Purchase or lease of lands or buildings
– Gifts or incentives
– Computer software
– HST
– Land Clearing
– Any ongoing operating costs associated with carrying out business
– Any costs that have the sole purpose of coming into or maintaining compliance with Requirements of the Law that pertain to current operation
What is the deadline for submitting an application?
Applications must be submitted by January 10, 2025. However, we suggest reaching out at least two weeks in advance to get started.
Are quotations required with this application?
To purchase equipment exceeding $1000, you need to submit at least two (ideally three) quotations from different vendors with your application.
Can I combine funding from other sources with my SNAPP application?
SNAPP application funding may be stacked with other funding sources up to a maximum of 75% of the total project cost. However, stacking with other funding sources from FedNor is not permitted.
Is a business registration certificate required to apply for SNAPP?
A copy of your Articles of Incorporation, Farm Business Registration No., Master Business License, or Business Name Registration is required to be submitted along with your application.
I have a start-up business; am I eligible for SNAPP funding?
Yes. Startups are eligible for SNAPP. However, you need to submit a completed business plan along with a 12-month financial forecast for your business.
What are the procedures for submitting a collaborative SNAPP application with two or more other businesses?
With two other collaborators, you can submit an application and potentially receive up to $25,000 at 50% cost-sharing. However, you are required to submit a copy of a written collaborative agreement along with letters of support from all collaborating parties in addition to other documents.
