Elements of Wit

Benjamin Errett (2014)

Wit: you either have it or don’t; at least that is what I always thought. Turns out that was an inaccurate assumption. According to Errett in Elements of Wit, wit can be studied and developed with time and practice. He defines wit as “the ability to be creative on the fly, to combine ideas in conversation, to make connections quickly and with joy...” and summarizes it as “spontaneous creativity”.  Wit can be applied to delight, entertain, and often scorn another person. In the world of business though, it should be utilized judiciously and with tact to ensure everyone is comfortable.

This book is a light read and will certainly elicit a smile out of the reader. It will also make you think about how you infuse humour, personality, and wit into your daily business communications no matter how formal or informal they may be. If the numerous quotes and stories related to rap artists seems out of place, go back to the introduction where Errett explains in brief the level of wit often required to create such lyrics. If nothing else, this book takes a unique perspective on professional language and verbal interaction that will provide food for thought for every reader.
